Jes Gruner, Director of Akagera National Park confirmed the presence of eight dogs which will be used to fight against poaching.
The park has spared no effort to deal with these poachers but the problem still persists. The proof is that even park rangers often catch these poachers but there are other poachers infiltrating the park.
Although the park fence was put in place to prevent poaching, the Park Management made the decision to proceed with the use of well-trained dogs to assist rangers in keeping the park secure.
The neighboring population of the park declare, aware of the importance of the park for their development, participate in the fight against poaching.
According to Lazard Kamari, from the Ndego sector, Kayonza District as well as his neighbors declare that they benefit a lot from park tourism. The management of the park uses the money that emanates from tourism in the construction of infrastructures such as classrooms, hospitals, etc. for the good of this people.
Although the population plays an important role in the park’s safeguarding activities, Jes Gruner urges the population to maintain close collaboration with the park management.
