Workers of the National Human Rights Commission have recently visited Nyarubuye genocide Memorial site in Nyarubuye sector -Kirehe district where many 1994 genocide against Tutsi bodies were laid.
Human Rights Commission visits Nyarubuye Memorial siteThe commission workers said that they came to visit this memorial site so as to know the history of the 1994 genocide against Tutsi that was done in Nyarubuye and they wanted to know the specifications of what happened so at to understand why it was different from all genocide done elsewhere in Rwanda.
Alicade Runigamakwandi a genocide survivor who testified about events that happened at Nyarubuye during the genocide said that killers used grenades and guns to annihilate the mass people that were at Nyarubuye parish.
Protais Murayire the Kirehe district mayor said that at this memorial site there are buried remains of about 51.000 people.
He also said that this memorial site was put on the National level and people who were killed at this area and who are buried in this site had come from former Rusumo and Rukira communes who sought refugee at the parish thinking that they will be spared.
Madalene Nirere the president of the National Human Rights Commission said that what happened in Nyarubuye is beyond comprehension and the commission gave out 1.5Million francs to this site as aid to help in its preservation.
